Amoeba Review
10/20/2012
Shiny Toy Guns’ third album of spunky disco-rock introduces a darker edge to the band, though they retain their fun spirit. Songs like “Somewhere to Hide” and “Waiting Alone” imply loneliness and solitude in their lyrics, but they go for the dancefloor musically, with “Waiting Alone” featuring the boy-girl vocals and romantic longing of a Human League track. Shiny Toy Guns’ Carah Faye Charnow's vocals range from heartfelt to keening, and it’s great to hear her pull back on songs like the shimmering “Carrie,” pulling listeners through the verses while vocalist and guitarist Chad Petree sings breathily through the choruses on one of their most affecting songs to date. Charnow’s performances on the simmering “If I Lost You” and creepy, whisper-to-a-scream “Wait 4 Me” recalls the moodier side of new-wave acts like Berlin to which Shiny Toy Guns are indebted. Of course, they can turn it up for a rousing techno-rocker like “Speaking Japanese,” but that’s the exception rather than the rule. III shows that a Hollywood-rock band like Shiny Toy Guns can mature and still have their sound hit just as hard — harder, in fact — than in their earlier days. Read More
