Amoeba Review
01/06/2009
They've done it again! America's favorite experimental indie rock ensemble are up to their 8th full-length, and they just keep getting better. Merriweather Post Pavilion, named for the rural Maryland amphitheater frequented by the Grateful Dead, is an ecstatic flight that's equal parts pulsing electro-disco and blissed-out Beach Boys-style ballads. With their guitarist on sabbatical, AC use mostly samplers and percussion here, much like on Panda Bear's Person Pitch, and the results are both deeply weird and surprisingly accessible. Though they're singing like it's a Laurel Canyon jam, the music is largely bent and distorted and ring-modulated into liquid extraterrestrial pop. The end result is some of the most original, creative and wonderful music in recent years. With trippy magic-eye artwork that pulsates in 3D! Read More
