Media Condition: Good CD Comments: Hole punch through UPC. Review Three years in the works, Magnolia is the first project from former American Analog Set singer/songwriter Andrew Kenny. Given that AmAnSet’s calling card was subtlety, it’s no surprise that the differences between Kenny’s new and old outfits are mostly a question of nuance -- which is not to say they aren’t there. Since AmAnSet’s 2006 demise, Kenny’s road stints with Ola Podrida (whose David Wingo contributes here) and especially Broken Social Scene helped recalibrate his songwriting, but in an even more hushed direction. Magnolia was also recorded to analog on eight-track, rather than the Pro-Tools AmAnSet had been relying on, and is a warmer record for it. Kenny plays more acoustic guitar, too, relying on guitar-top percussion and his own palm-mute bass-playing to provide most of the percussive elements on the record (especially effective on the Buffalo Springfield-like “Sugar”). The fundamental AmAnSet sound still serves as a road-map, albeit to new sonic territory: sleepy but insistent songs that pulse forward on repetitive and simple guitar figures, generating heat without resorting to obvious crescendos or middle-eight breakdowns. But the patron saint of many of these new songs could easily be the folk-country of Harvest-era Neil Young (with a technically superior voice). With his soothing vocals, few contemporaries do more with “do-do-do’s” or “ah-hah-hahs” than Kenny, and the occasional female foil (provided by ex-AmAnSet band mate Leslie Sisson) adds even more nuance – especially when those beautiful voices are used to deliver lines like “I hope you choke” (“Choke”). A few cuts feel too skeletal, most noticeably “Quit You Once,” but Magnolia is a worthy expansion -- via contraction -- to Kenny’s underrated catalog. -John Schacht		Buy $2.99
