Columbia’s fifth volume of the recordings of Louis Armstrong documents the trumpet king in the midst of a transition from New Orleans-style small groups to the big band sound that he would pursue until the late Forties. His repertoire broadened to include more pop songs, and Armstrong’s vocals began to be featured more heavily, though there was always a chorus for his horn. These 1929 versions of such fare as "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "Ain't Misbehavin'," and"Black and Blue" were very popular and influential at the time. In addition to the big band tracks, Armstrong is also heard backing singers Victoria Spivey and Segar Ellis. The disc also features non-vocal alternate takes of two songs plus a pair of previously unissued versions of “After You’ve Gone.” An invaluable collection.
