Discovered at the age of 16 while working as a cleaning woman, Evelyn "Champagne" King signed to RCA and released her first album Smooth Talk just a year later in 1977. The breakout hit "Shame," written by John Fitch and Reuben Cross, launched King the top of the charts and Smooth Talk went gold.

During the early 80’s, King recorded two number one R&B hits, "I'm in Love" and "Love Come Down." Several of her LPs also placed high on the charts, including 1980's Call on Me, the following year's I'm in Love, and 1982's Get Loose.

In 1988, she signed with EMI-Manhattan, and released Flirt and The Girl Next Door. In 1990, King recorded the album I'll Keep a Light On for the British label Expansion, whose featured musicians were Larry Graham, Jeff Lorber, and Paul Jackson, Jr.

Now King comes to Amoeba Music to celebrate her first release in 15 years, Open Book!
