"Herschell Gordon Lewis is the man who put red meat into the American cinematic diet. Ultimately Herschell made Quentin Tarantino possible." - Joe Briggs

In 1963, former English professor Herschell Gordon Lewis made a full-color gore-infested spectacular called Blood Feast, which is now considered by many to be the world's first splatter flick. The film world has never been the same. Blood Feast and his ensuing gore classics (such as Two Thousand Maniacs!, The Gore Gore Girls, Color Me Blood Red, and Wizard of Gore) spurred a blood-frenzied sensation; horror film-makers throughout the world become eager to saturate their productions with blood and guts to shock the young and old alike into buying movie tickets. We have ol' H. G. Lewis to thank (or blame, depending on how you see it) for our modern gory horror films. Besides being a crusader of carnage, Lewis also produced a number of exploitation movies on a variety of subjects such as wife-swapping, drugs, witches, and rock promoters.

A man of many talents, H. G. Lewis has also written over 20 books and has had a seasoned career in advertising. Lewis now runs Lewis Enterprises, through which he writes and consults individually. He is arguably the best-known direct response writer and consultant in the United States.

Thanks to the good people at The Late Night Picture Show, Mr. Lewis will be autographing DVDs at Amoeba!

And folks! If you like blood, check out our friends the Thrillpeddlers, who are just about the theater group keeping the spirit of Grand Guignol alive!
