Los Angeles is steeped in psychedelic tradition. From Love to the Beachwood Sparks, the sweet harmonies and fuzzy layers of sound have nuzzled in alongside crashing waves and traffic growls as the hallmark sounds of Southern California. The five-member band Kind Hearts and Coronets are the newest bunch of musicians to carry the trippy torch of psychedelia into the dark clubs of Silver Lake/Echo Park and beyond. Asa (vocals/guitar) formed the group less than a year ago from friends and musicians he's worked with in the past. "Asa had lots of music in his head that had to come out," says bassist Darren Grealish. "That sort of thing will drive you insane. Musicians need to play or they become stagnant. At that point he began that grueling process of recruiting good players into the fold." The 'good players' he found were Justin (drums), Glen (organ/piano/keys) Darren (bass/tambourine) and Meredith (trumpet and xylophone). The band's signature sound-the sluggish, melancholy tones of the urban landscape mixed with organic textures and lighthearted, Kinks-heavy pop-has yet to be formally put to disc. But that won't be the case for long. These prolific performers are tossing aside offers from major labels, and currently have an EP (with remixes by Ariel Pink) in the works, without a home. For now, catch Kind Hearts and Coronets where they feel most at home: on stage. "First and foremost we are fans of music so we know how it feels to witness a great live show. How it can touch you. We just enjoy the hell out of it. If our songs hit a nerve with people or touch them in any way we did our job. Even our sad songs can make you feel good." - Lesley Bargar, LA Alternative
