Join Flipper at Amoeba Berkeley in celebration of the vinyl reissues of four classic Flipper albums: Generic Flipper, Gone Fishin', Public Flipper Limited, and Sex Bomb Baby!

Flipper, the seminal punk/noise band from San Francisco, was formed in 1979 by Ted Falconi, Will Shatter, Steve DePace, and Ricky Williams.

Legend has it that it was Ricky Williams’ idea to call the band Flipper, as he had named all of his many pets Flipper, because it was a name he could easily remember. Ricky was fired within six months and replaced with Bruce Loose. Bruce appeared on the first recording released by Flipper, Earthworm, which was on the SF Underground / Subterranean EP.

After producing three singles and five albums, 1987 saw Will Shatter's untimely death. The band dissolved, but reformed in 1990 with John Dougherty on bass guitar. They released one single and then were signed by Rick Rubin to Def American. Together, they released American Grafishy in 1993. John Dougherty passed away shortly after and it was over ten years until Flipper played again.

It took a call from CBGBs to get the band back together. In August of 2005, with bassist Bruno DeSmartass of Bad Posture, Flipper played two CBGBs shows, the final show at the famed Olympic Auditorium in L.A., a sold out history-making event at The Fillmore in San Francisco, and a succession of other shows including a performance at The Toronto International Film Festival, a Paper Magazine Party in NYC (in which Moby joined them in a rendition of “Sex Bomb”), and an Edward Culver punk photo book release party.

Bruno left the band in September of 2006. When asked to play the All Tomorrows Parties festival in England, which was curated by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Flipper asked former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic to join up.

Novoselic spent about two years with Flipper, playing shows and recording an album of new material as well as a live album. He ultimately gave notice, after deciding the tour grind was no longer in the cards for him.

 So once again, Flipper had to take a step back and regroup. This time around the band enlisted Rachel Thoele, formerly of Frightwig, Mudwomen and Van Gough’s Daughter. Along with the three original members, Bruce Loose, Steve Depace, and Ted Falconi, the band is once again road ready.
