Lioness: Hidden Treasures (CD)
Amy Winehouse
Amoeba Review
12/06/2011
The first posthumous release from Amy Winehouse is a lovingly compiled collection of demos Winehouse recorded from before her 2003 debut Frank, through her internationally successful Back to Black and up to just before her untimely death this year. Far from a fans-only set, Lioness is a solid listen with moments throughout that rival the albums released during her lifetime, with show-stopping covers of “Our Day Will Come” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” that pay tribute to her voice and highlight the strength of her collaborators, who lay down a perfect foundation of reggae-tinged soul. The versions here of previous highlights “Valerie” and “Tears Dry” are as good as their more well-known versions, portraying the depth of knowledge of soul music producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, respectively, brought to the Winehouse table. Rounded out by “Body and Soul” — her last recording and a duet with Tony Bennett — Lioness is both a fitting tribute and the kind of record that should appeal to fans new and old alike.
