Melancholy, like embarrassment, is a form of galvanized duality. It is both sadness and a potential for other, which is to say, melancholia is not disengaged or unhopeful like some naive pure suffering. Rather it has hope, if only for itself, if only for its own engaged continuation. Teenage sisters Lily & Madeleine, on this, their debut for Asthmatic Kitty, mine that sort of reaching, hopeful melancholia in full. Harmonizing coolly and intimately atop semi-baroque, but not too flashy, folk-rock-pop instrumentations, they wax philosophical and romantic and I imagine hair falling and shoulders shifting. Much will be made of their age, their sisterliness, and their supposedly hyper-earnest midwestern-ness, but ideally it is their songs and their execution that will shine through the chatter.
