05/21/2013 Review REM aren’t much for punctuation, in case you’re wondering. But with Lifes Rich Pageant, they start to get big on enunciation. Michael Stipe peeked out of his shell on Fables of the Reconstruction; on Lifes Rich Pageant, he vivifies the lyrics. “Begin the Begin” is REM in full-on rock mode; “Cuyahoga” and “Swan Swan H” are exquisite. REM diversifies from standardized jangle of Murmur and Reckoning, and while it’s sad to see it go, it’s also a joy to hear REM as they start to bloom. Bon Jovi and Boston are still at the top of the charts in 1986, but REM were going to be huge.
