Joseph Kabaselle Tshamala, better known as Le Grand Kalle, was the most influential composer and bandleader in the Congo/Zaire, and indeed, of all West Africa, in the late 50s and early 60s. By combining Congolese music with jazz and re-Africanized Cuban rhythms, Kalle produced the sound known today a soukous, one of the most influential musical styles in the world.
