Amoeba Review

09/02/2013

Epic Scottish indie-rockers take the primal pound of Phil Spector and swathe it in My Bloody Valentine guitar fuzz, then top it off with James Allan's hugely mournful, soaring croon. Works every time! Though neither this nor the previous one is quite as gigantic as their debut, they both come pretty close. Singeing, tortured balladry til the teardrops fall, leading into huge, viciously catchy anthemic stompers like "Secret Truth." What sets them apart from the pack is the simple, indelible melodies, and the way Allan delves remorselessly into his emotional diary without shame or prodding. Did I mention the dreamy pompadours and black leather jackets? They don't reinvent the rock wheel, but they do roll it down the road a good bit. Read More
