Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams (CD)
Johnny Cash
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 05/28/2010
Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams, released in 1960, is Johnny Cash’s seventh record, and his fourth for Sun. Even though he signed to Columbia in 1957, Sun retained the rights to whatever they had in their vaults. Cash was already big on the country charts, and starting to crossover into the pop charts. Sam Philips knew a good deal when he heard it, and who doesn’t like Hank Williams? Although, they should have called this Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams, Sort Of, because only the first four tracks are Hank. The rest are Cash tunes, including retreads of “Folsom Prison Blues” and “I Walk the Line,” which is also on Sun’s first two Cash LPs.
