After departing Brinsley Schwarz in 1974, producer and power pop master Nick Lowe embarked on a solo career with his first release Jesus of Cool (originally released in the US as Pure Pop for Now People). This was due to the record label’s uneasiness over the word “Jesus” in the title. On his debut Lowe relentlessly pokes, in his brilliant and witty way, at the absurdity of the music business. Particularly on tracks like “Music for Money” and “Shake and Pop.” Lowe’s ability to employ current pop culture themes, sometimes echoing stylistically 60's Brill building classics, is unmistakable, especially on songs like “Rollers Show.” This song, about going to a Bay City Rollers concert, is included on the reissue version of the album released by Yep Roc. “I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass” is a superb dance song while other tunes like “So It Goes” beg to be sung aloud as your driving down the highway. Also included as bonus tracks on the reissue, is a fantastic cover of Sandy Posey’s hit “Born A Woman.” Why Nick Lowe never experienced the popularity of his musical companion, Elvis Costello, remains a mystery and with Jesus of Cool the question begs to be answered.
