Indigo Meadow (CD)
The Black Angels
Amoeba Review
04/01/2013
Austin’s Black Angels broke through to modest success with 2010’s Phosphene Dream and its slow-burning jam “Bad Vibrations,” used in the video game Spec Ops: The Line. Indigo Meadow mines the same sort of ominous psychedelia as their previous records, but there is more of an emphasis on melody here, playing the other side of the psychedlic coin as well. The album’s first three tracks rule as some of the band’s best ever, from the title track’s measured menace, which should have you strapping on black boots to tap along; to “Evil Things’” elephant-heavy fuzz stomp; to “Don’t Play With Guns” simple yet effective rendition of Jesus & Mary Chain in bellbottoms. Right down to their Velvet Underground-refing name, Black Angels have always been a band appealingly unafraid to wear their influences on their denim sleeves, however uncool it may be. That can go either way — “The Day” starts cool and jangly enough before devolving into a “Run Run Run” rip; while “Love Me Forever” similarly sounds way too close to the Velvets “Venus in Furs,” but in this case, they rip into the reverie with a badass heavy blues chorus you don’t see coming, making the whole thing worthwhile. When Black Angels succeed at hewing just close enough to their influences, they’re able to carve a meaty slice of heavy psych-rock on Indigo Meadow.
