In Outer Space [1998 Reissue] (CD)
Sparks
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 07/28/2010
In Outer Space is often considered to be the eccentric duo Sparks most commercial album, and it does indeed strike one that way, particularly on the opening track, “Cool Places,” a duet with Go-Go's member Jane Wiedlin. The track would be their first-ever song to chart in the top 50 in the US. But while this album most certainly has mass appeal with its synth-disco grooves and ear-pleasing melodies, it is not without Sparks’ genius and skewed vision on the world. The lyrical content cheekily expresses the life of a misfit, particularly on tracks like “Popularity” and the hilarious “I Wish I Looked A Little Better.” Other toe-tapping numbers include the quintessential 80s tune “All You Ever Think About Is Sex” and the lyrically amazing “Rockin’ Girls,” which contains the fan-favorite line, “You're the only girl I've ever met who hates ‘Hey Jude.’” While fans were mixed about the album upon its release in 1983, it holds up phenomenally well. While slick in presentation, if you peel back the layers, you will hear the amazing genius of this truly unique group. Read More
