In Concert (CD)
Donovan
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 12/01/2010
Recorded live at the Anaheim Convention Center in 1968, this album by Scottish folk pop superstar Donovan is a charming, seamless performance with surprising choices in both material and instrumentation. Opening with the somber “Isle Of Islay,” which is hardly one of his most recognized hits, it is clear that Donovan is choosing to offer more to the audience than just a “best of” show. Joined by flutist and saxophonist Harold McNair and percussionist Tony Carr, there are surprising jazz inflections on tracks like “Young Girl Blues” and “Preachin’ Love,” quite atypical for a folk pop star in 1968. There are also stunning intimate acoustic performances of “Celeste” and “Guinevere,” which stays true to the feel of the album versions. He finally gives the audience what they had been waiting for by closing with the crowd-pleaser “Mellow Yellow.” This is a wonderful performance that is sure to delight any Donovan fan.
