Bear in Heaven’s second album is warm stew of bubbling synths and ethereal melodies, as the group moves slightly away from the indie-prog sound of their debut and further toward grandiose shoegaze pop. The influence of Talk Talk weighs heavily as the band stretches its songs beyond pop-song structures and into gorgeous soundscapes, while The Cure and My Bloody Valentine seem to be influences sonically, as the band taps into those group’s rich melodic layers, especially on the propulsive “Idle Heart” and percolating circular keyboards of “Reflections of You.” Small details break up the sound, like the big drum crashes in “Kiss Me Crazy” or sirens and tribal madness of “Space Remains,” though I Love You It’s Cool is more a continuous listening experience than collection of songs, with hooks and individual melodies revealing themselves over time, each song like a thread in one greater electronic blanket. It’s a thoroughly engrossing sound world that Bear in Heaven create on I love You It’s Cool, one that’s as easy as it is pleasurable to get lost in. Read More
