Amoeba Review

Mark Beaver, Hollywood 02/04/2014

When I first heard the rumors that Light In The Attic were preparing an anthology of New Age, I really thought they were on skis heading towards the shark. Do we need a retrospective of New Age? I'm old enough that I saw much of the genre in formation, I saw the damage it did, I lived in the Bay Area and my radio dial skimmed often enough across the "Hearts of Space" radio show on long, late rides home, inducing me into a dangerous languor as I crossed the Oakland Bay Bridge. What the anthology actually delivers is a surprisingly wide range of facets on the concept. From acoustic to electro-acoustic to pure electronic, I Am The Center presents music that is more aggressive than I expected, as mellow as I expected, more mellow than I expected and throughout, more thought-full than I ever would have expected. There is passion in these dreamscapes, passion that, certainly, became less obvious as New Age became a "thing," but wholely present in this overview. Highly recommended.

Spanning new age collection from Light In the Attic. The "this isn't your father's new age" line running through the press materials for this record are a bit odd considering New Age's impact on synth acts like Oneohtrix Point Never, "dance" labels like ESP Institute and digger culture in general has been quite defined in recent years. Perhaps this is aimed at a more rock-oriented crowd. Regardless, it's awesome. Wilburn Burchette's guitar meanderings resemble the humble harmolodicism of Charalambides. Contance Demby takes an expansive piano solo over an organ motif which resembles Terry Riley. Underground legends like Laraaji and Iasos appear, and the comp has great flow, with highlight "Glide V" by Peter Davison closing the record on an appropriately thoughtful note. 20-page booklet and deluxe packaging.
