Hundred Waters (CD)
Hundred Waters
Amoeba Review
10/15/2012
The lovely, low-lit electro-folk dreampop of Hundred Waters is just about the exact opposite of gleefully obnoxious bro-step kingpin Skrillex, but that's exactly who's bringing you this wondrously pastoral stuff, courtesy of his label OWSLA. There's a lot of bands out there doing this kind of thing (Beach House, et al) but I am here to tell you that Hundred Waters are downright amazing at it -- it's so unbelievably pretty and atmospheric and transportive, they really stand out on their own, rather than evoking instant comparisons as many new bands do. A gentle, spacious, crystalline electro-jazz framework immediately sends you into orbit, where you will be seduced by the Nina Simone, Karen Dalton-esque dulcet coo of Nicole Miglis, accompanied by acoustic fingerpicking and sparkly synths. The melodies are so simple and flowing, they have that medieval quality of classic '60s UK folk like Fairport Convention or Nick Drake. In fact, if it weren't for the modern electronics, you could be forgiven for thinking this band stepped out of the '60s. Fans of modern stuff like Dirty Projectors, Broadcast or Stereolab will love this, but so will anyone who loves classic folk or jazz balladry. If these kids get any kind of exposure, they are really gonna hit the big time.
