Hounds Of Love (CD)
Kate Bush
Amoeba Review

For her fifth full-length, British singer and song crafter Kate Bush spent three years in her home studio. The result, Hounds of Love, is her masterpiece. Conceptually, it's comprised of two side-length suites. From the first half, four of the five tracks were released as singles: "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)," "Hounds of Love," "The Big Sky," and "Cloudbusting" are all ebullient slices of soaring art pop. As with the whole album, Bush created many of the songs' wondrous sounds – full, elastic, pulsating, sweeping – on the Synclavier sampling keyboard. This technology, filtered through Bush's fertile mind, creates a gateway to another world. This is especially true on the album's second side, titled "The Ninth Wave." Here, the tracks are woven together and take the form of an extended dream sequence, wherein lyrics about Houdini ("Under Ice"), Salem trials ("Waking the Witch"), and ghosts ("Watching You Without Me") bleed into Celtic folk ("Jig of Life") and Gregorian chant ("Hello Earth"). The album resolves reassuringly with the sweet (but not drippy) "The Morning Fog." A fantastical voyage, the unique sounds and deeply engrossing tales found on Hounds of Love remain just as compelling and truly timeless as the day the album was released.
