Amoeba Review

11/11/2013

Though Berlin-based Recondite aka Lorenz Brunner creates his music by digital means, Hinterland is enormously evocative of the natural world. He gives us clues with song titles like “Leafs,” a song whose synth flutter serenely, or “Stems,” a deep-bass pulsating track that builds and breaks apart over seven-plus minutes. It’s as though he’s capturing nature at night, a dialogue hidden from the human world, with his music. Of course, you need not see the fog-ridden landscape of Hinterland’s cover to enjoy its autumnal pull, as these wordless, experimental house explorations speak for themselves, notably the beat-heavy, ominous “Abscondence.” With Hinterland, Brunner seems to have hit on a novel concept—taking new age’s naturalist suggestions and applying them to mechanical, beat-driven music. Enter it with an open mind and you may just discover an entirely new world.
