Alanis Morissette’s latest album is her best and most consistent in years, sounding as loose and comfortable as she did on her breakthrough, Jagged Little Pill. Perhaps inspired by her self-satirizing, deadpan cover of the Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps,” she embraces the dance music her music has implied since the days of “You Learn” while retaining the radio-friendly pop-rock she built her career on with the misogynist call-out “Woman Down.” Opener and first single “The Guardian” harkens more closely back to her original sound with her catchiest radio ballad in years, showing the way Morissette paved the way for countless young female pop stars with an edge and confessional bent to follow, from Avril Lavigne to Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift. Speaking of that confessional quality, Morissette puts her eye for detail to use on the eyebrow-raising “Celebrity,” about an unhealthy desire for fame driven in part by her father and the darker side of that, singing lines like “I display the perfect amount of ennui/I'll carve my face a bit, you'll indulge me.” Some of Morissette’s ballads sag with overproduction, but she ultimately returns to the oversharing that made her such a sensation in the first place on “Numb,” about drug use, and “Havoc,” a hard-on-yourself ballad that feels painfully honest. As she closes the album with the sparkling “Edge of Evolution,” Havoc and Bright Lights proves Morissette still possesses the personality that made millions fall in love with her fighting spirit.
