Amoeba Review

09/01/2014

Stuart Murdoch’s songs as the frontman of Belle & Sebastian have always evoked silent, internal moments in the lives of young people—times of indecision, sexual confusion and indescribable in-betweenness. While Belle & Sebastian songs often sounded like Murdoch was describing the actions in a forgotten French New Wave movie, his work with God Help the Girl—first a Phil Spector-like project, with Murdoch as songwriter/producer and vocals by hired singers, and now a full-fledged film with a soundtrack—feels more like Murdoch is writing from the actual perspective of those lost kids he previously described. Tracks like the winsome, musical-esque “Act of the Apostle” and jangling, orchestrated “God Help the Girl” see the characters in question describing their thoughts and feelings in real-time, in some kind of false-confessional chamber-pop setting. Even the bits with film dialogue fit perfectly—the first half of “I Know I Have to Eat” seems to perfectly describe a fan of Murdoch’s music: “I loved reading, I kind of loved being by myself, I suppose, um, watching movies, dressing up…” The musical treatment suits Murdoch’s music quite well, and he doesn’t overdo it with the production (actually, he probably could have gone full Burt Bacharach with the whole thing and it would’ve been fine). A few times the soundtrack stumbles when the melodies aren’t memorable or the chemistry’s not right with the singer, but more often than not, it’s a treat for Belle & Sebastian fans who’ve long created their own narratives in their heads to the music. And when it works, it really works, as on the classic B&S-style “Perfection as a Hipster,” with vocals that call to mind Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker (aka a fantasy collaboration) and that boy/girl vocal dynamic Murdoch can seemingly always pull off. God Help the Girl’s a must-have for Belle & Sebastian fans.
