Even with ornate instrumentation, jazzy interludes and an overall fuller sound, Iron & Wine’s Samuel Beam still sounds like he’s singing private lullabies, sometimes bracingly intimate while retaining a universality that gives them a Biblical, eternal feel. “Caught in the Briars” opens the album in a sort of Van Morrison Astral Weeks fashion, turning the quiet balladeer into a jazzy crooner. Echoey blues ballad “The Desert Babbler” applies that feel to a more traditional Iron & Wine song, while “Joy” turns it back around with funky bass and sly saxophone, with Beam’s smooth vocal giving the song a quiet storm feel. Despite the album’s downcast opening, Beam turns his newfound soulfulness upward for “Low Light Buddy of Mine,” a singsongy, upbeat revival of sorts that still feels very Iron & Wine and will please any longtime fan. Like Cat Power, another neo-folk artist who turned her sound toward jazz and soul, Iron & Wine’s new record and sound may require fans to adjust their frequencies a bit to grow accustomed to the album’s choirs, vibraphones and jazzy intonations, but when they do, they’ll be rewarded with an entirely new facet to Iron & Wine’s sound that retains the folk wisdom and rootsy sound Beam has forged over numerous releases. It’s the rare artist who will turn over a new leaf successfully this snugly into a robust career, and Beam has done so remarkably on Ghost on Ghost. Read More
