For years, Prince engaged in a bitter, public and, ultimately, couter-productive feud with his long-time label, Warner Bros. Emancipation finds him freed from his contract and newly signed with EMI; it also finds him newly wed (although he is still insisting on being addressed with an unpronounceable symbol instead of his name, i.e., the “Artist Formerly Known As” phase). Over the course of this sprawling, three-disc set, Prince addresses ballads to his new wife and family; he puts forth rigorous funk numbers; there is an entire disc of pop. Yet while he does categorize and organize the material, this is still a new release that’s three hours long, although it merits the extended attention.
