Santa Barbara’s Gardens & Villas hit an intoxicating groove on their new album, Dunes. Chris Lynch’s vocals sound like they’re dancing with you over the throbbing beats of “Colony Glen.” Flutes, new-wave synths and a cool bassline get the seductive “Bullet Train” going. “Chrysanthemums” is absolutely lovely, with a simple drum machine beat and piano driving a gleaming power ballad. Producer Tim Goldsworthy (Cut Copy) knows how to work wonders with the band, keeping things simple but moving gracefully and allowing plenty of room for Lynch’s ample pipes to cut through, his work particularly shining on the treatment given to the Cure-ish “Echosassy.” With Dunes, Gardens & Villas announce themselves as the next great dance-rock band. Get ready.
