Don't Lead Me On / Heartsick And Lonely

Dedrick Martin

Amoeba Review

08/16/2013

3 seconds into this 1958 single, Dedrick Martin's powerful voice blasts out of the speakers and immediately makes it clear that this is no ordinary doo wop track. His voice comes from deep in the chest, full of vibrato; like an opera singer who can also swing. The song itself is a tale of a man realizing his love is not as true as he thought, but in the end he realizes he's still a sucker for her. On the flip, Martin's vocal prowess is let loose on a peppier number, which belies its similar tale of a love gone wrong.
