Usually when a band makes their third album self-titled, it signifies a rebranding of sorts. That’s certainly the case with Delta Spirit, which finds the band honing their rootsy sound to greater heights. Frontman Matt Vasquez’s impassioned vocals ride waves of crystalline guitar over a syncopated beat on “Tear It Up,” as though the band is making a point of it, again, that this isn’t the same band. One listen to that song or the surging dance-gaze of “California” should let you know — the change is good.
