Deguello (CD)
ZZ Top
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 05/28/2010
ZZ Top had a bit of a creative swoon at the end of the 70s, before reinventing themselves for the MTV era by adding sequencers and synthesizers and a cartoonish image. In fact, the band—Billy Gibbons on guitar and lead vocals; Dusty Hill on bass and vocals; and Frank Beard on drums—sort of disappeared for a while. Degüello is the group’s sixth LP; it was originally released on August 27, 1979, as part of their new deal with Warner Bros. Records. It yielded the minor hit “Cheap Sunglasses,” but “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” is the true keeper, and makes Degüello worth owning.
