De Vermis Mysteriis (CD)
High on Fire
Amoeba Review
Bay Area metalheads High on Fire are at it again with De Vermis Mysteriis, producing yet another excellent album centered around a high-falutin‘ concept — this time, it’s Jesus’ twin brother, reincarnated and time travelling — while still delivering pummeling great tunes underneath it all. “Serums of Liao” and “Bloody Knuckles” open the album with a one-two punch of muscular sludge, with frontman Matt Pike’s formidable growl unleashing over hooky riffery and shifting beats. The album is brilliantly paced, as the proggy, pretty guitar interplay of “Samsara” unveils to the “Ace of Spades”-ish “Spiritual Rites.” And there’s hardly a wasted second on De Vermis Mysteriis, as even the seven-minute “King of Days” is one of their most tuneful — power-ballady, even. High on Fire continue to appeal to the stoner metal fan — and the stoner metal fan in all of us — with the widely appealing De Vermis Mysteriis.
