Computer World (CD)
Kraftwerk
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 06/08/2010
Kraftwerk peaked with 1978’s elegant and profoundly influential Trans Europe Express; 1982’s Computer World is where, unfortunately, they slip. It’s a shame, and ironic: They were so ahead of their time that they had electronic music all to themselves for an entire decade; and they were so influential that by 1982, everyone else was starting to imitate them. Furthermore, they started to pay too much attention to the technology, and drifted from the organic qualities that made 1974’s Autobahn such a groundbreaking revelation. Computer World isn’t bad, per se, and the track “Pocket Calculator” is a fabulous, Speak ‘n’ Spell booty call, but this is the point where the band unknowingly dips into self-parody.
