Beach Fossils curb some of the intricate guitar interplay of their first album in favor of straightforward guitar rock on Clash the Truth. It’s a bold move forward for a band who clearly wants to connect more with its audience, and it pays off on songs like the title track, which fires off on a riff borrowed from the Sex Pistols’ “Pretty Vacant” recast in slacker garb. The band still knows how to balance its spastic guitar antics with a laid-back appeal that makes everything seem like they’re just noodling by the beach, even as the songs reveal considered detail at a close study. They even go acoustic on songs like “Sleep Apnea,” the ’70s singer-songwriter feel of which suits the band remarkably well. But when you want the band to rouse itself and rock out, they do, on “Careless,” which is anything but, as its solo riff peels out into the album’s most compelling hook. Some of Beach Fossils’ rock ambitions fall short, but the band’s willingness to let go of some of its hipster cool results in new ideas, like inviting Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino for sexy shoegaze singalong “In Vertigo,” and they usually win you over by song’s end, like how “Shallow’s” “Everlong”-ish riff becomes a chapel of chiming guitars. Give it time and the long and loose Clash the Truth works its way to your heart.
