The sound of Punch Brothers’ latest album is that of barely constrained enthusiasm. On "Movement and Location," these bluegrass rebels emit seemingly impossible waves of gorgeous noise on acoustic stringed instruments, with mandolin player Chris Thile’s (formerly of Nickel Creek) falsetto towering above it all — Bon Iver fans, take heed. But while Punch Brothers in the past may have seemed intent on showcasing their classical training and progressive prowess — they’ve played a forty-minute sweet titled "The Blind Leaving the Blind" — on this album, brevity is the soul of their wit, though they may pack their increasingly pop-oriented songs with head-spinning (in a good way) melodic ideas. Behind the lightning-speed fingerpicking are memorable tunes, like the thumping title track and an ace instrumental cover of Radiohead’s "Kid A."
