The most controversial and creative rap collective since Wu-Tang, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All make freaky, ultraviolent low-budget horrorcore, the vileness and baseness of which are more than made up for by the punk rock directness of teens that really, truly don't give a f*ck. Mellowhype floats the stoney (but laser-focused) lyrics of Hodgy Beats over the twinkly, plodding alien beats of Left Brain, with fine contributions from Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Not suitable for anyone easily shocked or offended. This is a reissue of last year's Blackenedwhite mixtape, one of the best OFWGKTA releases so far, cleaned up and given a proper pressing on Fat Possum. Deadly serious goofoff from some very talented kids! - DT
The success of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All and leader Tyler, the Creator, has perhaps positioned OFWGKTA as kind of an indie Wu-Tang Clan — if that sounds reductive, its only to highlight that there’s a lot of talent going on within this hyped group, starting with MellowHype, which consists of Odd Future members Hodgy Beats and Left Brain. Blackenedwhite (which was originally released in 2010) is oddly bleak and fun at the same time: “Primo” is prime chillwave/hip-hop hybrid; electro-goth track “64” sounds like a postapocalyptic “Monster Mash”; and “Igotagun” is two minutes of fast-paced nihilism. “F666 the Police,” featuring Tyler, the Creator, seems like the album’s stab at a single, and its combination of lo-fi aesthetics, social commentary and big hip-hop posturing make it as odd and beguiling as anything the Odd Future crew has recorded. - BG
