No matter what the drama in her life, Canadian singer-songwriter Edwards’ voice always cuts through and soars above, frail, tough, high and commanding. This one ditches the modern country-rock trappings for a little synthy indie-pop vibe, not surprising since it chronicles the end of her marriage and her new relationship with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, who produced. Half the songs explore the despair of ending one life, the other half the joy of starting another. If you’re used to hearing her as a country gal, the transition to indie diva may take a minute to get used to -- but it’s the same old Kathleen Edwards you love, and her songwriting is as fine as ever.
