Justin Robinson began with Carolina Chocolate Drops, known for being one of the only black old-time string bands — not that you’d need to know the color of the musicians’ skin to enjoy the music. But Justin Robinson brings the same sort of playfulness that band was known for (they’d do an old timey cover of Blu Cantrell’s “Hit ‘Em Up Style,” for instance) to this new project, which similarly draws inspiration from Piedmont blues (a sort of ragtime-influenced bluegrass variety popular in the early 20th century). Robinson and co. find plenty of inspiration within the style and stay faithful to it while not ignoring updates like clean, clear production that gives songs like the gorgeous “Butcher Bird” a more orchestrated feel, while “Bright Diamonds” employs stomp-claps and chants to deliver a thoroughly modern take on the genre that enables them to stand amongst the current indie-folk set as well. On the alternatingly sweet and swinging Bones for Tinder, Justin Robinson and the Mary Annettes show one needn’t be boring or overly reverential to pay homage to an antiquated genre.
