There have been many superb recordings of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony but with this monumental many faceted work there is always room for a superb new one. Gustavo Dudamel gives what is the most exciting performance of Mahler’s Fifth since the Bernstein recording from the 1980’s. Dudamel leads his own Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela in a splendidly reproduced recording from D.G. It is amazing that was an essentially a youth orchestra matches the virtuosity of the Vienna Philharmonic. Dudamel is evidently the most important conductor to emerge from the new century.
