Years and albums would come and go before Guided By Voices would finally garner a few critical nods with the release of 1993’s, Bee Thousand. Predictably, lo-fi production dominates all 20 tracks—which isn’t so different from the previous six albums—but the timing for indie charm and kookier audio realms found more willing ears this time. Robert Pollard is as cryptic as he is poetic on the record, leaving plenty of room for forensic interpretation and digressive romanticism in his lyrics. “Hot Freaks” combines the songwriting talents of both Pollard and Tobin Sprout, and though the narrative structure is loose and intriguingly strange, don’t invest in it for any kind of closure. “I Am a Scientist” captures Pollard’s writing in all its nonsensical glory.
