Taking their cue from bands such as The Jesus & Mary Chain and drawing from a ‘60s psychedelic influence, Los Angeles natives Darker My Love deliver a fuzzy, bombastic, and delightfully trippy sophomore release. The album opens with the driven “Northern Soul,” which is sure to get any crowd up on their feet, and continues in a similar fashion on “Pale Sun.” The moments on this album that shine most brightly, however, are when the group explore more melodic and intricate styles on tracks like “White Composition” and “Two Ways Out.” At times there is too much of an early ‘90s influence, making one wonder if the group had existed during the Creation Records days in the UK would they have been more readily embraced. Nevertheless, they deliver one solid release, and fans of both early ‘90s Britpop and 1960s psychedelia should find this listen quite exciting.
