Lovers of dirty garage rock have celebrated this sloppy, hard-drinking, ramshackle band of Southerners for their simple, raucous tunes and vintage-sounding freakouts. On Good Bad Not Evil, though, the Lips truly break through these expectations and force a wider audience to sit up and listen. While they still give you that surging rock sludge and those raspy, broken harmonies, they’ve here written some of their catchiest hooks, and most thoughtful, funny tunes, a fine stew of country, punk and soul that stands tall and points the way to future greatness.
