Review
Child prodigy Billy Nicholls was a mere 16 years of age when the manager of The Rolling Stones, Andrew Loog Oldham, snatched him up for Oldham’s Immediate record label in 1966. He first put the youngster to work writing for fellow Immediate act Del Shannon before embarking on the recording of Nicholls’ own full-length album, which was produced by Oldham in 1968. Unfortunately, Would You Believe? never saw the light of day, with only a few copies pressed as promotion. This was a shame as it halted the budding genius songwriter’s career. The album is pure pop bliss, fantastically composed and produced, blending the sweet sunshine harmonies of The Beach Boys with the reigning 1960s British sound. Every song on the album is a gem to behold but perhaps the few that shine more brightly than the others are the dreamy “Feeling Easy” and the spectacularly rough “Girl From New York,” which features Small Faces’ Steve Marriot on guitar. The album was re-issued in 2000 on the Immediate imprint in conjunction with the British re-issue label Sequel. -Tiffany Anders
