An early nomination for coolest record of the year goes to this Stones Throw compilation of music from Atomic Forest, a very little known Indian psychedelic band from the '70s. Atomic Forest filtered their covers of American bands and movie themes through an Indian lens, with heavy funk bass, touches of tabla and broken English adding to the fun. However, harmless kitsch this ain’t — the low-fi production can’t hide the band’s impressive musicianship and capable vocals, which float over absolutely acidic covers like “Foxy Lady” that seem to burn the tape reels as they progress.
