Born To Sing: No Plan B (CD)
Van Morrison
Amoeba Review
11/22/2012
Van Morrison’s 34th studio album is another fine entry into his canon of lyrical soul-jazz. “Goin’ Down to Monte Carlo” is a stunning highlight, as Van Morrison guides us through a long, dark path of solemn tones produced by his six-piece band. Similarly bleak is “If in Money We Trust,” though it introduces a reggae-inflected beat and delivery to the album’s jazz palette to make its anti-materialist message go down smoother. Elsewhere, things are warmer, as on the first single “Open the Door (To Your Heart)” and the title track, in which the 67-year-old artist swings and growls and shows age hasn’t dulled his passion one bit.
