Amoeba Review
John Schacht 05/15/2010
This is a typical late-50s Horace Silver date – in other words, a swinging session of hard-to-resist hard bop classics. The one difference here is that, unlike most Silver recordings of this era, which were typically planned, rehearsed and executed in one day, his second record with his best and longest-lasting group was recorded over three different sessions in August and September 1959. Otherwise, business as usual, Silver’s bright glissandos and bluesy comping providing both soloist color and rhythmic framework of the highest order on these seven originals and the standard “How Did It Happen?” The pace is mostly break-neck, trumpeter Blue Mitchell and tenor sax man Junior Cook exchange bolts of lightning on cookers like the punchy (and concise) title track, the front-to-back-sprint of “Break City,” the Eastern-tinged “The Baghdad Blues,” and the Silver classic “Sister Sadie.” The under-sung bassist Eugene Taylor and drummer Louis Hayes keep things charging forward, in the pocket throughout. Mitchell and Cook get a chance to blow cool on Silver’s two original ballads, “Peace” and “Melancholy Mood,” and we’re reminded how good even (allegedly) second-tier soloists like these two were in this richest of jazz eras. But the star is Silver, of course, who shows how many shades of blue in the blues there are here, through his stellar piano playing and compositional skills. A classic set for any harp bop collection. Read More
