My Promiscuous Cochlea: Everyone My Ear Took Home in 2014

Posted by Mark Beaver, January 8, 2015 05:33pm | Post a Comment

Vinyl isn't cheap, nor is is tawdry, so the collecting of it has become much more a matter of discernment than it used to be.

The following is a list, alphabetical, perchance by merit, of the vinyl (new titles and re-issues) that made the cut in 2014. It doesn't presume to be a "Best Of," as I am very aware of the peculiarities of my particular set of listening apparatuses. It is a list of the vinyl that my scattershot attention locked on to, brought home and allowed to bed down in the limited space that I allot for records in my home.

AMEN DUNES
Love (Sacred Bones)

Folky, trippy, with that under-water production we've heard from the likes of KURT VILE, except where VILE is stoned and hanging with his buddies, AMEN DUNES' Damon McMahon is lost in a vast open space, deep in the mushroom and calling "Marco Polo" to the night sky. Stark and brittle while somehow managing to remain lush. I don't think I listened to any album of 2014 as often as I've listened to this.

Dolly Parton "Benny Hill Show Theme"

England's annual outdoor Glastonbury Festival ended on Sunday and was reportedly a lot of fun this year. Thanks to YouTube and BBC TV, we here in the US who couldn't make it to Somerset (140 miles south east of London) can enjoy via video replay. Above and below is a video sampling of some of the 2014 highlights including Metallica, The Black Keys, Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band featuring Yo La Tengo, Lily Allen, and the crowd favorite Dolly Parton who closed the festival playing to an estimated 100,000 delighted fans in the Pyramid Arena area of the fest. Parton's set included such hits as "9 To 5," "Blue Smoke," a slightly updated version of "Jolene," plus - when she broke out a small saxophone -  an extremely well-received version (two versions actually - one backwards) of "Yakety Sax" - aka The Benny Hill Show theme song.

One of the greatest indie rock bands of all time helped start the year off in support of their album Fade, playing a set that combined heavy guitar histrionics with more intimate moments. Read my full recap here.

Amoeba SF & Berkeley's 10 Best In-Stores of 2013

As we all know (because we're living the history as it's being made), the music industry has changed

Best Coast plays Amoeba SF
dramatically in the past decade and continues to do so rapidly. Everyone still loves music, but the concept of ownership, collecting, and procuring music is constantly evolving for all of us. No matter how you prefer to get music -- in the cloud, on vinyl or CD, downloaded -- one thing hasn't changed; the best way to experience music is live and in the flesh. The Experience of being part of a live performance, giving energy from the audience to the musician while they play their hearts out, can't be stored on any device. You just have to live it. We here at Amoeba Music consider it paramount to continue to provide live entertainment in our stores and keep Experience alive.

Amoeba San Francisco and Berkeley were particularly blessed with great in-store performances in 2013. From legends like Nik Turner, Billy Bragg, and Camper Van Beethoven to new faces on the scene like Lissie and Bastille, each and every show was a fantastic reminder of how thrilling live music can be.  It was daunting to have to pick just ten of these shows, but here they are in reverse chronological order...Amoeba SF and Berkeley's ten best in-stores of 2013!

-- Lee Ranaldo In-Store Guitar Clinic, 12/11/2013, San Francisco
Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo amazed and mystified the audience with nearly a half-hour of continuous guitar mastery, at the end of which he finally looked up and asked, "Any questions?" Lee was in town with his project Lee Ranaldo and the Dust.
