Thousands of Louis Armstrong Exclusive Remastered Downloads Hit Amoeba's Vinyl Vaults

louis armstrongAmoeba Music has painstakingly remastered thousands of tracks from jazz genius Louis Armstrong’s vast catalog, and you can now download them all at’s Vinyl Vaults!

Here is Louis as you’ve never heard him. More than 600 sides have been expertly remastered from pristine original 78s that sound amazing—plus thousands of hard-to-find and undiscovered songs remastered from out-of-print and obscure vinyl sources not found elsewhere digitally!

Check out our beautifully restored rare Louis versions of “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “Just A Gigolo” and many others. We have also remastered dozens of live shows, including the previously legendary, previously unheard “Live at Kitsilano High School” show from Vancouver in 1952—plus hundreds of lost radio and TV performances for your listening pleasure.

Here’s an example of the remastering we’ve done for these Louis Armstrong tracks on the song “Static Strut” from the original Vocalion 78 released in 1926. Hear the song change from the original to the Amoeba-remastered version at the 20-second mark.

Amoeba Presents Dr. John at the Hollywood Bowl

Amoeba Music is proud to present New Orleans music legend Dr. John at the Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday, July 31. He’ll be paying homage to another legend, Louis Armstrong, in this show dubbed “Props to Pops: Dr. John’s Tribute to Louis Armstrong.”

At this show Dr. John will be joined by guest trumpeters, singers and other musicians, including The Blind Boys of Alabama, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Telmary Diaz, Anthony Hamilton, Terry Blanchard, Nicholas Payton, Arturo Sandoval, Marcus Belgrave and Wendel Brunious. Vinyl Vaults Proudly Presents Billie Holiday

We have added Billie Holiday to Amoeba Music's ever expanding, much-lauded Vinyl Vaults. This Amoeba-exclusive, historic vault of American music icons, which specializes in preserving valued vinyl releases by carefully transferring them to digital files, already includes such icons as Louis Armstrong.

Our curated collection of digitized vinyl and 78s will also unveil Kenny Rogers this month, but more on his inclusion into the Vinyl Vaults in a later Amoeblog.

For now let's take a look at the jazz/blues legend that was Billie Holiday and whose Vinyl Vaults additions will include approximately 30 different tracks (most emastered and now available from Amoeba) "Lady Day's" short 44 years on this earth (1915 - 1959) was filled with the blues and her musical legacy is a part of American music history. Amoeba deserves major props for helping preserve. One of the folks responsible for the tedious task of digital transformation of Amoeba's Vinyl Vaults is Gregory Griffith. I talked with him over the past couple of days to find out more about these Billie Holiday additions to the Vinyl Vaults that are now available in three digital files: mp3, M4A (lossless), or WAV.

What We're Doing With What They've Done: Amoeba's "Vinyl Vaults"

If you don't already know, we here at Amoeba are very much underway with our monumental archiving project for our website, simply called the "Vinyl Vaults". It's a really spectacular beginning to what is and will be a huge undertaking in offering to the public digital transfers of the most remarkable older, oblique and hard to find works of creative peoples around the globe throughout the history of recording. I myself, am curating a large part of this, and have been very excitedly pulling out many, many unique pieces of vinyl out of the used LP buys that we take in at Amoeba's buying counters, and sending them into the ether (ie,our great team) to be archived and considered for sale on Our sound team takes these copies of the LPs, 7" singles and 78 rpm discs and digitizes them via ProTools, into 24-bit files, and then make mp3, mp4 and 16 bit .wav files (CD quality) from the 24-bit master and split up the sides into tracks for folks to download. We sometimes offer of the highest resolution 24-bit file as well for a certain title. And in many cases the original LP or 78 or 45 we used to digitize the sides is available right there next to the download. 

How do I decide what we save to digitize and offer to the public as I go through all these LPs? The records almost speak to me as I sift over the aquisitions we've purchased in the collections we buy. If I don't  know the record, I'll see the look of the cover, the paper texture, and the era of manufacture as the first things revealed. Even the weight and smell of the "thing". Exotic LPs have a feel to them, a way they communicate to the holder that they are something interesting, distinctly special, and a thing to be investigated further. If you've held a phonograph record in your hands  you know what I mean. Often the packaging will tell me what's inside, but how many records say "vocals" or "guitar" or "piano", and yet how different can all these records be? The actual sound on the disc is an exciting mystery of immense promise before I hear it. So then, to play a little bit, I "needle-drop" (sample bits of) so many records in a day. And it just so happens that Amoeba offers 1 1/2 minutes of free sample listening for all the records' songs, so this is comparable to how I listen to potential pieces for the Vaults. Once chosen, a disc will undergo a discerning ear's analysis and judgement for condition, and a little research to see if folks already know about this record. Ultimately, the bliss of finding a transcendent musical performance by a deceased or obscure artist or on a long-defunct label is intoxicating. And to think that others can later enjoy these provocative sounds via the "Vinyl Vaults"  is exhilarating.

Recap: February Charity Auction to Benefit New Orleans

Tipitina's Foundation logoOn Saturday, February 2 we kicked off "New Orleans Month" at Amoeba Hollywood with a rockin' auction hosted by the inimitable and charming Billy Calhoun. Billy's soothing and unflappable style not only inspired some major bidding, but he deftly and seamlessly dropped some science on all the onlookers about New Orleans and the two foundations we were focusing on (New Orleans Musicians Clinic and Tipitina's Foundation), as well as what we are doing on and how long we have been doing the charity auctions. People learned a lot while they had fun bidding on really cool items. More than a few customers mentioned that they didn't realize we do these auctions every month, and that they learned a lot from all that Billy had to say. Billy educated folks on our Vinyl Vaults and Louis Armstrong digital restoration, as well as the exclusive release of the Congo Square Project which is an amazing collection of music available only on New Orleans Musicians Clinic Logo

We had several bidding wars, and Billy effortlessly kept the momentum going and kept people engaged. Here are some of the highlights for today's auction---one of the highest generating auctions we have had in a long while. Way to go Billy!!
