Avi Buffalo at Amoeba Hollywood

Long Beach-based rocker Avi Zahner-Isenberg and his band Avi Buffalo performed a few songs from their Avi Buffalo At Best Cuckoldsophomore album, At Best Cuckold (Sub Pop), recently at Amoeba Hollywood. The new album finds Avi Buffalo building on the sound and aesthetic they crafted on 2010's self-titled debut. The first record found the young 19-year old Zahner-Isenberg and his cohorts writing songs filled with age appropriate context while showing signs of a true songwriter. Four years later and Avi Buffalo have grown up, just a little. At Best Cuckhold digs deeper into their West Coast brand of indie rock and you can hear the experience of a well oiled band seeping through the speakers. The songs are well structured and the production quality is great. You get the sense that Avi Buffalo are acting like responsible adults and then Zhaner-Isenberg reminds you not to take it too seriously with songs like, "Can't Be Too Responsible."

In support of At Best Cuckold, Avi Buffalo played to an excited audience at Amoeba Hollywood. Watch the teaser below and check out more from this performance on Amoeba.com.

Watch the Allah-Las Get Dreamy at Amoeba Hollywood

Allah Las

Backed by the LA based label, Innovative Leisure, the Allah-Las have managed to take their garage/surf-rock sound to an international audience. With tour dates across Europe, Asia, and Australia, the band is racking up frequent flyer miles and growing their fanbase the good ol' fashioned way: touring, touring, and more touring. The group's busy schedule brought them stateside for a special in-store performance at Amoeba Hollywood. Playing to a packed house of devotees of all ages, The Allah-Las brought with them some extra arsenal. On stage the band featured six musicians total, including a percussionist, a keyboard player, and a slide guitar player. The result was a nice warm wall of sound that would make Arthur Lee proud. The Allah-Las are no strangers to Amoeba Hollywood. In fact, Pedrum Siadatian (lead guitar), Matt Correia (drums), and Spencer Dunham (bass) were all employees during the early days of the band back in 2008!

The former Amoebites teamed up with producer and labelmate Nick Waterhouse to deliver their signature Southerrn Cali, lo-fi, surfer sonics on their sophomore effort, Worship The Sun (Innovative Leisure). The band has grown as performers and songwriters since their 2012 self-titled debut and the result is a much more mature sound on Worship the Sun.

Deap Vally

Los Angeles-based duo Deap Vally have been delivering a firey, in-your-face brand of fuzzy power pop-rock in their three short years of existence. Drummer Julie Edwards (formerly of Pity Party) and guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Troy have amassed a cult following of die-hard fans through a series of explosive live performances. In 2012, the duo set the Internet ablaze with their debut single, "Gonna Make My Own Money." One month later they inked a major label deal with Island Records. With a growing buzz and a rabid fanbase, Deap Vally have become festival regulars with stints in Japan, the United States, and the UK, including performing at Hyde Park in London with Iggy Pop.

Deap VallyAfter releasing the four song EP, Get Deap (Universal Records), in April 2013 to positive reviews, Deap Vally returned with a new full-length, Sistronix (Interscope), in October 2013. On Sistrionix, the duo amps up their already aggressive take on a bluesy garage sound while expanding their beefy guitar riffs. These two ladies are not very "ladylike" when it comes to rocking out, bringing their no holds barred attitude to the stage and onto the record. The 11 songs on Sistronix will have you rushing to their next live show in no time!

New Video from Folk Legend Linda Perhacs at Amoeba Hollywood

Linda Perhacs

While working as a dental hygienist in her early twenties, Linda Perhacs stumbled upon a music career. After client Leonard Roseman (who happened to be a film composer) convinced Linda to share some demos she recorded, the composer was motivated to sign Linda and produce an album. In 1970, Perhacs released her debut, Parallelograms, on Kapp Records. The album initially went unnoticed by music critics and failed to garner any attention due to the record label's reluctance to promote the album. Discouraged by the lack of results, Perhacs returned to her career as a hygienist and didn't look back. What happened next is a story for the ages.

Over the span of about three decades, hardcore folk collectors, music enthusiasts and rare vinyl junkies rediscovered Parallelograms and the album developed a cult following. Much like many other obscure records, the album found its way into the hands of hip hop producers and was subsequently sampled by one of music's most famous rappers, The Notorious B.I.G., Parallelograms became a thing of legend that left listeners questioning the whereabouts and story behind Linda Perhacs. Now regarded as a classic by folk aficionados and music critics alike, Parallelograms has been reissued twice (2005 and 2008) since its initial 1970 release date. Perhacs is now getting the attention she deserves and has a bonafide fanbase 44 years later. (Watch Sky Ferreira talk about Parallelograms in her What's In My Bag? episode.)

Watch a Blazing Performance by Tijuana Panthers at Amoeba Hollywood

Tijuana Panthers

Despite flying under the mainstream radar for almost a decade, employing the DIY strategy so many do, the Tijuana Panthers are finally poised for a breakthrough. Much like their Innovative Leisure labelmates Hanni El Khatib, Nick Waterhouse, and the Allah-Las, the Tijuana Panthers have been crafting their own brand of alternative surf rock while tucked away in sunny Long Beach, California.

In 2010, the band self-released their debut, Max Baker, following it up with Semi Sweet (Innovative Leisure) in 2013. The latter is a lo-fi rock-pop record at times reminiscent of '50s era doo wop with puppy love themes. For their latest effort, Wayne Interest (Innovative Leisure), the Panthers teamed up with producer and Black Keys touring bassist, Richard Swift. The lo-fi production style is still very intact and guitarist Chad Wachtel's surf licks rock with authenticity. The band shows off their punker minimalism, while still delivering catchy melodies backed by echoey drums.
