UCB Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood

On Saturday, November 2, Matt Besser and Ian Roberts from Upright Citizens Brigade brought the goods and the guffaws with their dry wit and nutty antics. It was mayhem and mirth on the Amoeba Hollywood stage stage as they helped raise the bids up! Several customers were overheard saying they didn't know what the hell was happening, but it sure sounded exciting.

Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Iprovisational ManualThe Upright Citizens Brigade is a comedy improvisational troupe founded in LA by Matt, Ian, Matt Walsh and Amy Poehler. The UCB Theatre is dedicated to fostering both an appreciation and education of the arts through affordable and high quality comedic performances and classes. Their new book, The Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual, was borne out of years of work by the authors to provide the first step-by-step instruction manual for the art of comedic improvisation.

Matt and Ian shot several zingers into the crowd as they drove the bids up and up...

"Not bidding today is just like kicking a homeless person as you walk down the street!"

Our November charity auction beneficiary is our neighbors, Food on Foot. Since 1996 they have provided the poor and homeless of Hollywood with nutritious meals, clothing, job opportunities, and assistance in the transition to employment and life off the streets.

As always, Amoeba matches all winning bids and 100% of auction funds go straight to the charity.

Kurt Braunohler Amoeba AuctionOn Saturday, September 7 we had the amazing and suave Kurt Braunohler return to host our auction at Amoeba Hollywood and sign copies of his new comedy album, How Do I Land? – out on Kill Rock Stars.

Don't tell me you don't know about comedian Kurt Braunholer?? He's been seen on BUNK (IFC), Chelsea Lately, Bob’s Burgers (FOX), Delocated (Adult Swim), Comedy Central Presents, Jon Benjamin Has a Van (Comedy Central), The Heart She Holler (Adult Swim), Assy McGee (Adult Swim) and Human Giant (MTV). He can also be heard on the radio on This American Life, telling a story which he is currently developing for television for HBO.

Kurt was recently named one of Variety’s “10 Comics To Watch.” He’s also featured in Time Out New York's list of 50 Funniest New Yorkers, named as a "Comic to Watch" by Comedy Central, the New York Comedy Festival and TimeOut NY, as well as “Best Male Stand-Up” by the ECNY and “Best Unscripted Host” by the New York Television Festival. The man is funny!!

People came out to bid on concert tickets, gift certificates, collectibles, a special Kill Rock Stars “Kurt Pack” and so much more. The store was abuzz, and the heated bidding wars drove the temperature even higher than the record-breaking Los Angeles heatwave. Kurt is a natural at making people laugh while they dig deep in their pockets. Plus, he was a smooth criminal when it came to sliding the bids up and up and up...

Jimmy Pardo Amoeba Hollywood AuctionOn Saturday, August 3 we had the hilarious and spot-on comedic patter of Jimmy Pardo guest host our monthly charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood. Jimmy hosts the hugely popular podcast Never Not Funny and The Pardo Patrol for Conan O'Brien, plus he hosts monthly nights at the Upright Citizens Brigade. No joke---HE'S FUNNY ! Jimmy has hosted our auctions before and he came with an experienced swagger to drive those bids up and UP and UP! He managed to create some electric bidding wars on collectible items, as well as concert tickets and fun one-off toys...

This month's recipient is Smile Train, the world's leading cleft surgery organization with thousands of partners and programs operating in more than 80 countries, including some of the world's poorest and most in need. Their mission is to help the millions of children in developing countries who are suffering from unrepaired clefts. And in addition, Smile Train trains doctors and educates families. The proceeds from this month's auction will help so many children live happy and healthy lives. Lives they would otherwise not had.

Smile Train

As has been said many times before Jimmy Pardo "always finds the funny" and he certainly did on Saturday. His quips and his live, free-flowing, stream-of-consciousness improv helped us raise one of the highest amounts in our recent auction history!!

Here are a few of the highlights:

Recap: July Charity Auction to Benefit Downtown Women's Center

Posted by Amoebite, July 8, 2013 12:53pm | Post a Comment

Beth Stelling at AmoebaWe were thrilled to have comedian Beth Stelling host our monthly charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood on Saturday, July 6. We were thrilled because she is damn funny! She is right at the top of the list of LA Comedy Acts to Watch in 2013, and she happens to be one of Patton Oswalt's favorite up and coming comics.

Beth was up early at 4PM on a holiday Saturday, so she was amped and ready to drive those bids up! Her deadpan yet sassy delivery proved to motivate people to bid and she helped raise a lot of money for LA's Downtown Women's Center. Nice.

Amoeba's monthly charity auctions happen on the first Saturday of every month. We began hosting charity auctions when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and over the years we've raised a ton of money ($450,000+) for New Orleans musician relief, green charities, animal charities, Doctors Without Borders and many local organizations. Amoeba also matches all winning bids and 100% of all auction bids go straight to the charity. This month's beneficiary, the Downtown Women’s Center, provides permanent, supportive housing, a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and advocates ending homelessness for women.

Saturday's auction item highlights include:

  • Queen Latifah with Roy Ayers – Hollywood Bowl tickets -$30.00
  • Belle & Sebastian – Santa Barbara Bowl tickets - $35.00
  • Savages – El Rey tickets - $40.00
  • Amoeba VIP in-store pass to show of choice - $25.00
  • Beatles Special Pack (tote bag, t-shirt, mug, magnets, coasters, McCartney at Amoeba poster) - $35.00
  • Yo Gabba Gabba! signed poster and buttons - $20.00
  • Trader Joe's $50 Gift Certificate + vintage lunchbox - $47.00
  • Urban Outfitters $50 Gift Card - $40.00
  • Four passes to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles - $35.00
  • Amoeba coffee mug and Coffee Bean Gift Cards - $12.00
  • Special wacky, crazy weird and wonderful promo surprise pack (Lady Gaga disco ball keychain anyone? They Might Be Giants fez) - $ 15.00
  • Signed book/CD/DVD from Josepsh Gordon Levitt’s HitRECORD collective - $30.00
  • Warped tour package (custom skate deck, water bottle, t-shirt/tote) - $40.00
  • Signed book and poster from Ric Ocasek (The Cars) - $20.00
  • World War Z movie poster (signed by composer Marco Beltrami) - $21.00
  • Madonna package (rare postcards and mug) - $7.00
  • Eric Andre Poncho - $3.00
  • Wine Tasting package - $53.00
Downtown Women's Center
All together the entranced audience bid $542.00 and with the Amoeba match it means $1,084.00 for the Downtown Women's Center in Los Angeles, an amazing organization.

Beth was quirky and charming, and she charmed the dolla bills right out of the hands of our holiday weekend shoppers. This auction had some awesome prizes and people scored some amazing stuff for a mere fraction. Score! It's great when you get to help a great cause AND score good stuff.

Recap: June Auction to Benefit My Friend's Place

Posted by Amoebite, June 3, 2013 04:05pm | Post a Comment

On Saturday, June 1 we had the mad auction skills of the hilariously droll Matt Ingebretson (yeah, we didn't know how to pronounce it either), who produces his own comedy showcase "Art Fuck" and contributes to Funny Or Die and The Onion. He also has a brand new comedy album Holy Fuck.

My Friend's PlaceThis month's auction beneficiary was My Friend's Place, which assists and inspires homeless youth to build self-sufficient lives. Through their nonprofit drop-in resource center and programs in Hollywood, they offer a comprehensive continuum of care, health, educational, and therapeutic services to over 1,700 homeless youth and their children each year. They're a really great organization which is close to our hearts here at Amoeba. And of course, as always, we match any bid so the bid is doubled!

We were also accepting donations of new socks for My Friend’s Place – so it was our own "Sock Hop" – and customers donated socks for a $2.00 off coupon.

We started hosting our charity auctions back in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and over the years we've raised a ton of money ($450,000 +) for New Orleans, Green charities, Animal charities, Doctors Without Borders and many local organizations. It is a great place to score all kinds of rarities and signed items, as well as concert tickets and crazy promo items.

Matt was addictively funny, with his dry "I don't understand Bjork, do you?" and..."we're all dying!! Dying every single day!! Go to a show already. Buy some tickets to a show! Do something for the youth of LA...buy these tickets!" He was also deceptively wry. Meaning, you didn't even know how funny he was until about a minute after he said something, and then you started laughing out loud. There was a 60 second delay on Matt's dry, deadpan delivery – but it was bitingly hilarious.
